What: An SPJ workshop on covering the GLBT Community: the mishaps, triumphs, and mistakes of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender coverage, and how to take gay journalism in Minnesota to the next level.  A discussion with: straight reporters who cover GLBT issues, gay journalists, and GLBT community leaders.

Moderated by Allan Malkis, board member of the Minnesota Coalition on Government Information, this event asks whether individual are “looking to hold a government agency accountable for the action it takes.” The discussion will revolve around how to conduct an inventory of a state or local agency’s actions.

sharon_schmickleJoin the Twin Cities Media Alliance next for the next Brown Bag Lunch with A Journalist, Wednesday, March 25 at noon, at the East Lake Public Library, 2727 E. Lake St., Minneapolis: Sharon Schmickle, who has reported from Iraq and Afghanistan, and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1995, left the Star Tribune in 2007 to join MinnPost, where she writes about science and foreign affairs.

‘Reporting God? Relgion, News and Freedom’ at 37th annual First Amendment Friday

domkeSt. Cloud State University will host professor David Domke on April 3 for the 37th annual First Amendment Friday at the Atwood Little Theatre. Domke, an author of two books about religion in American politics, will deliver the keynote address at 9 a.m. After Domke’s talk, a panel of reporters will discuss news and religious issues they have covered and some religious leaders will react to them.

MPR Presents: Author Frank Deford March 30 in St. Paul

deford1Minnesota Public Radio will host author and commentator, Frank Deford, March 30 at 7 p.m. on the campus of Macalester College. Deford has twice been voted Magazine Writer of The Year by the Washington Journalism Review.

This event is part of the Broadcast Journalist Series, an opportunity for the Twin Cities community to connect with top working journalists and correspondents about the people and events that have shaped their careers.
