Determination 44: MN State Auditor Arne Carlson v. Corporate Report MN

Minnesota State Auditor Arne H. Carlson complained that an article in the magazine falsely implied that he was involved in a conspiracy to gain control of investment of public pension funds for improper purposes. He further complained that the publication failed to properly correct the article’s errors after he had brought them to its attention.

Determination 41: Coalition for a Progressive DFL v. Duluth News-Tribune

The Coalition for a Progressive DFL complained that the newspaper failed to find substantial evidence for the claims it made in an article about the Coalition’s fundraising efforts. The Coalition also claimed that a follow-up article inadequately clarified misconceptions created by the first and that the follow-up did not receive comparable treatment to the first.

Determination 26: MN Soft Drink Association v. Minneapolis Tribune

Dave Locey, lobbyist for the Minnesota Soft Drink Association, complained that the newspaper deliberately slanted its coverage of a litter tax bill and mandatory deposit bill under consideration by the state legislature in its 1977 session.

March 12th, 1976

Determination 22: Doug Elwood v. St. Paul Dispatch

Doug Elwood, et al., acting on behalf of 14 area gay rights groups, complained that an entertainment column contained inaccuracies and descriptive words offensive to local gay rights groups. Even though a second column by the same writer admitted and corrected the errors, Elwood complained that it didn’t sufficiently remedy the original inaccuracies and that defamatory language was used in both columns.

Determination 16: Committee for Effective Gun Control v. Minneapolis Tribune

Jon Willand, secretary of the Committee for Effective Crime Control, complained that inaccuracies in an editorial were not adequately corrected by the publishing of his letter to the editor with an editor’s note admitting the error.
