Determination 121: MN DNR v. KSTP-TV

Participants for the DNR included Rod Sando, Commissioner; Ron Nargang, Deputy Commissioner; Marcy Dowse, communications manager, and Scott Pengelly, information officer. KSTP declined to participate in the hearing, but forwarded to the Council a copy of its response to the DNR.

Determination 120: Shelton Gunartne v. Fargo Forum

This complaint was heard on written submissions only. The Fargo Forum declined to participate.

Bob Shaw and Nedra Wicks, former Council members, took part as public members in order to ensure a balance of public/media members. The proceedings took place at South Central Technical College in Faribault.

Attending the hearing were the complainants, Jeffrey Thompson, Rice County Attorney and Assistant County Attorney Noah Cashman, and the Hanlon Family: Donna (mother), Casey, Kelly, and Katie (children) and the children’s uncle, Dan Hanlon. Representing the Faribault Daily News were Lisa Schwarz, managing editor, and David Balcom, publisher.

NOTE: The Minnesota News Council hears complaints about journalistic ethics. The Council DID NOT make a ruling on the accuracy or integrity of the science of the two climatologists. That question is beyond the purvue of the Council.

Attending the hearing were the complainants, Dr. Patrick Michaels, Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia, and Dr. Robert Balling, Director, Office of Climatology, Arizona State University. Respondents for the Star Tribune were Susan Albright, Editorial Page editor; Jim Lenfestey, formerly employed at the Star Tribune and writer of the editorial in question; Kate Stanley, current global warming editorial writer; and Eric Ringham, Commentary Page editor.
