Determination 57: Volunteers for Ira Rubenstein v. North Suburban Press

 In the November, 1984 general election, Ina Rubenstein was a candidate for District 53A representative. The North Suburban Press is a weekly distributed on Tuesdays. On Tuesday, November 6, the day of the election, the newspaper contained an editorial endorsing various candidates, including Rubenstein’s opponent. The opponent, who was the incumbent, was re-elected. Grievant is the Rubenstein Volunteer Committee. The committee does not dispute the right of the editor to endorse, or the content of the editorial, nor does grievant claim that the editorial made a difference in the outcome of the election. Grievant believes it is questionable journalistic practice to issue an endorsement on election day.

Determination 54: Minneapolis Urban League v. Star Tribune

Ronald Edwards, president of the Minneapolis Urban League, complained that an analysis article in the newspaper was inaccurate, “jaundiced” and misrepresented the Urban League position on the issue of the appointment of Mary Emma Hixson as head of the Minneapolis Civil Rights Department.

Determination 53: City of Mahnomen v. Fargo Forum

Mahnomen City officials complained that the paper published an inaccurate story that was damaging to the city’s reputation, then failed to adequately correct the error. The officials contend the correction should have appeared on the front page and that the newspaper should also have made a public apology.

January 1st, 1984

Determination 52: Spectrum v. Star Tribune

Bruce Brisbine, Vice President and General Manager of Spectrum subscription television, complained that an error damaging to Spectrum, which appeared in a popular local sports column, should have been corrected in or near the column. Brisbine also alleged a conflict of interest on the part of the column writer, who is also employed by a Spectrum business competitor.
