An Election Connection: a cross-cultural get-together with MPR News and Minnesota Council of Nonprofits
Minnesota Public Radio News and Minnesota Council of Nonprofits are partnering on two nonpartisan events during the week before the 2008 election. Chris Roberts of MPR News will host an informative and entertaining evening for people who are new to the election process Tuesday, October 28. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The program will take place between 7-8 p.m. at the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Center for Community Building in St. Paul.
Roberts will interview representatives from both the McCain and Obama Minnesota campaigns, plus talk to some people from MPR’s Public Insight Network who became American citizens and recently voted for the first time. The show will end with a discussion with the audience about their voting stories and questions. Some program material will be written in Spanish, Hmong and Somali. Voter guides in multiple languages will also be available.
One event will be in St. Paul and one in Minneapolis; both will feature the same content. Besides the programming, the audience will have access to people trained by the Minnesota Participation Project, whose aim is to familiarize people with the voting process. There will be information about polling places, rides and how to register. There will be a laptop set up with MPR’s Select A Candidate, an online tool that matches voters with candidates who reflect their values (now available in English and Spanish). MPR also hopes to sign people up for the Public Insight Network, a resource for journalists.
